First steps: setting up a class
Visit your teacher dashboard and make sure you’re on the Classes tab. This can be found by clicking on your name in the upper right side of the screen and then choosing “Teacher dashboard” from the dropdown menu.
Creating a class with SAT teacher resources is simple! There are three ways you can do this. You can
- Create a new regular subject class (math, English, science, etc.) and add on the SAT teacher resources
- Create a new class specifically for SAT
- Add SAT teacher resources to an existing class
Option 1: Add SAT teacher tools to a regular subject class (math, English, science, etc.)
- Select “Add new class"
- Name your class and hit next—or if you already have a class, you can import from Google Classroom.
- In the subject picker, select the primary subject for your class.
- You can also select SAT in this view. If you choose not to, the system will invite you to "add SAT" in the next step.
- Add students to your class or skip and finish class creation.
- Select your new class in the dashboard, and go to the newly created SAT tab.
Option 2: Create class specifically for SAT prep
- Select "Add new class".
- Name your class and hit "next"—or if you already have a class, you can import from Google Classroom.
- In the subject picker, scroll down and select SAT.
- Add students to your class or skip and finish class creation.
- Select your new class in the dashboard, and go to the newly created SAT tab.
Option 3: Adjust settings of existing class
- Select the relevant class.
- Navigate to that class’s Settings tab.
- Select Turn on SAT test preparation reporting.
- Locate and navigate to the newly created SAT tab in the class.
Adding students
Once you’ve created your class and enabled the SAT tools, all of the students in that class will automatically get an invitation to share their SAT activity with you.
The first time they log in to Official SAT Practice after you’ve enabled the SAT teacher tools and added students, they will see a pop-up on their SAT Dashboard. Once they agree to share, you will start seeing their information in your class.
Note: If you add additional students to a class with SAT tools enabled, we will automatically send them an invitation to share their SAT data with you.
Overview of the SAT class tab
Once you have created a class, you can start following along with your students’ progress and see relevant, related content that you can use in your class!
In the SAT tab of a class, you'll now see the following sections:
- SAT practice activity
- Students who have not yet shared their SAT activity
- Top math classroom lessons
- Top reading & writing classroom lessons
Top skills your class needs help with
After receiving feedback from teachers, we’ve added a new section at the top of the SAT class tab that shows the top reading and writing skills along with the top math skills each class may need help with, based on an aggregated rank ordering of students’ skill levels.
Teachers who have limited time for SAT instruction each week can use this section to decide at-a-glance what skill is best to spend time covering across their class.
SAT practice activity
This first table (updated in October 2019!) shows an overview of students' practice activity on Official SAT Practice.
For each student, this section includes the following items:
- Time practiced for any specific time range.
- The number of total practiced questions.
- The percent of Math or Reading & Writing questions done that followed recommendations. Recommended questions are from skills that the system recommends to a student based on their strengths and weaknesses.
- Whether or not the student has connected their account to College Board for personalized recommendations based on past PSAT/NMSQT or SAT exams.
Time filter
Use the time filter in the top left corner to view your student’s practice activity across any time range, including all time, last 30 days, last 7 days, yesterday, today, or any custom range with a specific start and end date. Note - this will change the Practice activity table but not the Top lessons
Downloadable data
You can download a .csv file of the SAT practice activity chart by clicking the Download CSV link in the top right corner of the chart.
Practiced questions
Use the # of Practiced Questions column to get a view for how many questions a student did in a particular time range.
% Recommended Math or Reading & Writing Questions
Official SAT Practice provides recommended questions based on each student's past practice as well as their PSAT/NMSQT or SAT exam results (for students who linked a College Board account), or the results of their diagnostic quizzes (for students who did not link a College Board account).
We encourage students to work on recommended questions to target the concepts they most need to work on. To help teachers determine if students are working on recommended questions in Math or Reading & Writing, we’ve added two columns that show a percentage calculated from the # of recommended questions done in each subject divided by the total # of questions done in each subject. Teachers can quickly scan these percentages to discover which students might need a reminder to follow recommendations.
Clicking on those percentages will expose a popover that shows a student’s current recommended skills at a glance. Note that current recommended skills are for the current moment in time, and may not apply across the entire selected time range.
Individual student data
Selecting any student in the SAT practice activity table will show more information about that student's recent practice.
For each student, you’ll see the following information:
- The skills currently being recommended to that student: the student’s recent activity, including the amount of time and number of questions the student practiced over a specified time range
- A calendar view of the student’s self-created practice schedule
- The exact questions the student completed. Note: Teachers can select the row to see the individual questions practiced as well as every student’s responses to each question.
- The student’s practice test scores. This section will be empty if the student has not taken any practice exams. Note: These scores are not meant to be used for grading, as each student has different goals and is in the process of practicing. Additionally, students can search for the answers to these practice exams online.
- Additional information around the student’s test days, whether they’ve linked to College Board, and their overall skill level
Students who have not yet shared their SAT activity
This section will list all of the students who have not yet shared their SAT data with you and accepted you as an SAT teacher. You can resend the SAT data-sharing request to all students at once and you can hide this section at any time.
Top Math or Top Reading & Writing classroom lessons
These sections provide teachers with an aggregated view of the most relevant SAT skills to work on with students. There are 42 skills for math and 28 skills for Reading and Writing. They are rank ordered based on students’ skill levels on these topics and the frequency at which the topics appear on the exam. Learn more about skill levels.
You can see the number of students in your class at each level across skills and can search for specific skills to work on with your class.
Coming soon, you will be able to search for math skills by the state standard they cover.
Individual skill information
For each skill, you can select the View details and browse lessons button to access related content and resources relevant to that skill.
Once you select View details and browse lessons next to the skill, a pop up window appears that includes the following items:
- Lesson plans by teachers, for teachers: relevant lessons with guidance on how to teach that skill in a classroom setting. These lessons were created by a group of teachers in collaboration with the College Board.
- Official SAT Practice worked examples: videos that walk a student through an SAT question in that skill. Teachers can assign these videos directly to students.
- Related content: other exercises, videos, or articles outside of Official SAT Practice from Khan Academy’s broad library of materials that teachers can assign directly to students.
- Top recommended practice for: a list of students for whom this skill is among the specific short list of practice we are currently recommending to them.
- Student skill levels: a deeper dive into the student skill levels. Click on a student’s name to dive deeper into their activity.
Email notifications
Teachers with SAT enabled on their classes will receive a weekly notification about their students’ progress. These emails will include information about practice tests students just completed or have upcoming that week, plus a summary of students’ activity for the past week.
Helpful tips to implement Official SAT Practice in your school
We’d love to share some helpful implementation tips and methods that have been successful with other teachers and schools!
- Explore the student resources to familiarize yourself with what students will see by selecting the SAT subject under Test Prep in the Subjects dropdown at the upper left of the Khan Academy screen.
- Collaborate with other teachers to share strategies and troubleshoot issues together. To share and see tips and best practices from other teachers, check out our teacher community.
- Develop a school action plan with measurable goals for the year, and continue to track those goals.
- Engage students’ families, volunteers, or community groups to emphasize practice.
- Try the free SAT teacher tools e-learning course. It’s an hour-long, interactive training experience that walks you through ways you can integrate SAT practice into your curriculum. You can complete the training at your own pace.
